The plan for today was to leave Granada first thing in the morning, take the ALSA bus to Cordoba, spend the day there, then take the Renfe train onward to Seville for my next destination.
Everything went smoothly. I arrived in Cordoba, left my luggage and walked about 20 minutes to the Mezquita, only to find it closed for a service to commemorate Columbus. Ugh! The area around the Mezquita was very busy. It was around noon, and all the shops and restaurants were filled with other unlucky tourists like myself waiting for the Mezquita to reopen to the public. I thought about waiting around, but I didn’t already have tickets and the ticket box office was closed. I knew that when they would reopen in a couple of hours I would find myself in a very long line just to get tickets and I wouldn’t be able to really enjoy the majesty of the Mezquita before catching my train onward to Seville. So I gave it up. I guess I’m just going to have to return to Cordoba.
Instead, I lost myself in Cordoba. Just walking around exploring the city. Eventually, I settled for lunch at Taberna La Montillana before heading back for my train. It was a long and leisurely lunch with the main course being people-watching. But my appetizer was so divine. I had their berenjenas fritas con miel y queso de cabras. Oh my. They made an aubergine eater out of me. So delicious. When I come back to Cordoba, I will need to come here again. In the meantime, I’m going to recreate the recipe at home.
The outdoor seating area was next to a church. I was witness to a wedding ceremony. Having seen part of a ceremony while walking around Granada and now this I have come to the conclusion that Spanish weddings are simply majestic.
