Our tour of Caracol with Pacz Tours came with a couple stopovers at other sites in Mountain Pine Ridge.
Rio Frio Cave was the first stop. It has a huge (65 feet) opening that is simply awe-inspiring.
It wasn’t too dark inside as a second opening was not too far away so we were able to admire the rock formations without difficulty. The stalactites were huge, the boulders were huge…it was quite impressive.
But having explored ATM the previous day, this was certainly an entry level cave!
A shallow river (the Rio Frio) runs through and there is a footpath down below to the “beach”. As with other caves, this cave is also believed to be sacred and to have been used by the Mayans for rituals. I think we spent about 30-45 minutes here on this detour.
There were several more nature sightings along the way.
The next detour was Rio On Pools. This is a succession of ponds created by more huge rocks along the river creating mini-waterfalls. We took a refreshing swim here. I did not partake in the natural waterslide along the smooth and slippery rocks. Talk about a true butt massage.
At no point did we feel rushed. This was another fabulous day.
It was well into the evening by the time we returned to San Ignacio.
