First, there was the rape. Then there was the leniency because “a prison sentence would have a severe impact” on the rapist. Then there was the heart-wrenching statement from the woman who was raped who has been given no options but to live with the severe impact of the rape, the victim-blaming trial, and of the callous judgement on her life.
Now, the father of the rapist says no way should his son have to pay for “20 minutes of action”and boohoo he’s already suffered enough because he doesn’t even want to eat steak anymore. And I am so angry. So disgusted. So angry. Yes, it’s 2016 and this is the United States of America and this occured on the grounds of the prestigious Stanford University. And our rape culture is as real as the media tells us about honour killings in Pakistan. There is so much white male privileged insane misogyny going on here, I feel like Number 5. My brain cannot compute.
Clearly the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. And boys will be boys even when they grow up to be judges. But then I take a deep breath in and ask myself what is so unique about this travesty? Nothing really. Now is that not wretched?
Every day, rapists are not held accountable for their actions. But having no previous criminal history doesn’t stop perpetrators of other heinous crimes from serving their due time unless of course the perpetrator doesn’t have the luxury to be of a certain socioeconomic class and/or dare I say race.
Ugh!
