How many capsized boats in the Mediterranean this year alone? How many lost African souls? Why is the rhetoric that European countries, specifically the Mediterranean ones, are not doing enough to rescue these migrants? Why are we blaming Italy and asking what is Europe going to do?
What about the African countries themselves? Those who only offer instability, dysfunction, and lack of opportunities to their citizens that causes them to flee for greener pastures, for lands that uphold basic human rights? What accountability have we demanded from the African Union who seemingly are indifferent to this crisis as they are with many other crises involving their member nations? What about the African countries where the smugglers and human traffickers thrive, who for all we know might be part of a large international criminal trafficking ring?
I ask again what is the purpose of the African Union?
